CHARACTER NAME: Renzō Shima
SERIES: Ao no Exorcist
CANON POINT:
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE: Looks like a complete tool with pink hair and over here.

PERSONALITY: What you see is pretty much what you get with Shima. He is the most carefree member of his class at True Cross Academy, the self-proclaimed “Epitome of Cool” (in reality, actually kind of a loser, but what other people think doesn’t matter unless they have boobs), and is only in the school at all because his two childhood friends, Bon and Konekomaru, are. As the fifth and youngest son of his family, he has had very few -- if any -- responsibilities or expectations, leaving him to be as idle as he wants to be. It’s only out of loyalty to his friends and their dreams, rather than his own, that he’ll do much of anything useful at all. He doesn’t even want to be an exorcist; it was something everyone assumed he would want.

He would rather drift through life without too much work or trouble. His demeanor is easy-going and playful, quick to laugh when he finds anything humorous and to make a joke, even when things are looking bad. It should be no surprise that he isn’t a serious person by any stretch, either, and known to complain when people are being too serious about something or other. He doesn’t get why anything should be stressed over so much, since it won’t fix anything or get it done with faster. He will also complain when he goes ignored or when his hardships (which are rarely so hard) get passed over. Even his own mother asks about how Bon or Koneko are doing before asking about him! Oh no, what a tough life he has, how everyone just doesn’t seem to care, or so he might say.

Another thing he would much rather do instead of being super serious or studying is spend as much time around girls as possible. Shima is a shameless flirt, called the perv of the family by his brothers. He loves women, often complimenting them on how cute they are, swooning over nurses, passing out his phone number, and using up most of his free time going out on dates... even if he does get rejected from time to time. But not to worry, he’s sure he’ll get Izumo’s number one day!

His work ethic is terrible in comparison to the other two from Kyoto. While the other two have either memorized all or half of the chapters of the Gospel of St. John, Shima admits to not having memorized a single line of it. Later in the series, his older brother asks him if he’d like to spar a bit. Even with all his other classmates busy helping out or training in their own free time in the Kyoto arc, he declines the offer. He would rather go swimming, preferably with girls. Laziness aside, his dislike for troublesome things has, at least, led to some merit. With his relaxed and friendly attitude, he’s become good at stepping in to diffuse tense situations. He has an easy time talking to other people, without even an iota of shyness, which has come in handy before when he has had to explain stubborn people to even more stubborn people or try to put a situation into perspective for them.

He is very much a follower, always having trailed after one person his entire life. He doesn’t appear to be discontent with this, as leading the way is a bit more effort than he’d like to put forth. He’s more comfortable with being the back-up to his friends and family, even if it means having to drag them out of fights now and then. Though that doesn’t mean he’s without a mind of his own. He’ll break from the pack mentality if it seems like more work to stick to it than go against it. When he decides to go against the decision to ignore Rin after his true identity comes out is a good example of this, because it was just too awkward and too much trouble to do that with the other boy being forced to interact with them all the time. Shima claimed he knew Rin was a good person, anyway, and immediately returned to being friends with him. He shrugged off the concerns of his other friends over it, resolute in his decision.

Though even if Shima isn’t exactly hero material, but he can’t be called a complete coward, either. He claims to enjoy spooky events like when lights suddenly cut out, jokingly calling them little “tests of courage”, and he’s held the line between a ghoul-type demon and his friends with only his monk staff without too much complaint. Though he will balk at some things initially, he will chase everyone else straight into danger if they seem so intent on going that way. But when you get down to it, he may be willing to help his friends because he cares for them, but he has issues with throwing his life away in the face of insurmountable hardship. There’s such a thing as picking your battles, you know! In the most recent chapters, the end of the Kyoto arc, he even nearly abandoned Konekomaru, one of his best friends, when it looks like sticking around to fight will get them killed. It’d be common sense to run away from this kind of stuff, right? Especially if it’s something they can’t do anything about? He would like to think so, though deep down he knows it isn’t such a simple idea. Even he ended up returning to keep on fighting despite those thoughts.

It was also in that arc that it was revealed he doesn’t care about being an exorcist, much for the same reasons. His family constantly tells him about his brave eldest brother who died saving him, but he never knew him. He can’t bring himself to care or believe he needs to live up to that standard, even though his family expects it of him. That may very well be the root of his preference for an untroubled and, well, normal life.

Also to be noted is that he has a massive case of entomophobia, the fear of insects. He has gone into full-out panics just from being surrounded by, say, moths. He gets scared enough that he’ll black out anything that happens from point A, where he runs into all the bugs, and point B, when he finally snaps out of the panic. He outright refuses to help with anything that involves him getting near bugs, as they render him totally useless.

ABILITIES: Shima is trained to fight with staff weapons and isn’t half-bad at it, since his family specializes in fighting with khakkhara and he has been training since early childhood. He is also currently an Exwire of the True Cross Order, training to become an Aria, which is an exorcist who uses chants and verses to fight. Theoretically, he knows how to kill demons this way (admittedly, he is a terrible student and hasn’t memorized many verses at all) and has at least a rudimentary knowledge of seals, but he’s never been seen using them in the manga canon so knowing about it doesn’t mean he can do anything with that knowledge due to being a loser-- i mean too cool for school shut up shh.

POSSESSIONS: A khakkhara (Buddhist ringed staff) that he can break down into three separate pieces for concealment, a True Cross camouflage poncho (it’s like an invisibility cloak, only a poncho, and only works when the hood is up; he was still wearing it from when they went to free Rin in a previous chapter), a now totally useless cellphone, clothes.

( from a previous game )

A new city, no matter how apocalyptic it might look on the surface (as well as under the surface, between the surface, above the-- well, you get the idea), it did always mean one very important detail: new girls. If anything made the clearly very traumatic (perhaps an embellishment) experience of getting dumped into a new world all better, it would undoubtedly be checking out the local scenery. It was something Shima had always done back in his home world, always the ulterior motive to going out for a walk, or going to lunch in a new place, or going to class in general, or... Alright, maybe that was a bit much. He did have other things on his mind at those times, too, as he did now, but he wasn't inclined to dwell on the lack of resources or how poorly he might survive here or even that winter was closing in on a ruinous city that had no central heating! That was all too serious, too depressing, so, girls it was.

Besides, there was nothing wrong with chatting to cute girls from other world, dimensions, universes, planets, whatever or wherever they might have gotten pulled from. It would be informative! Right? The first part to Shima's ‘make the day better’ plan was, as usual, to spend a day tracking down the more popular places in a city, but here it would have to be the most common cross sections in the safer parts of town. Part two was staking out a comfortable spot to lounge against a wall. An integral piece to the game was the folded paper he had with him, something that could pass as a map. The final step was, most obviously, to check out the people who happened by, all the while pretending to be reading the unfolded 'map'. It wasn’t difficult to fake. You only got caught if you stared too long, after all, and Shima was way too cool to make that mistake.

That was the step he was on now, keeping track of those who came and went through the area. Some had potential, some were too young, some obviously out of his league purely by age alone, and some... Huh. Did that girl have a tail? Well. Tails were certainly a new thing.

"...but still worth a shot."

He pushed away from his cozy spot on the wall and jogged after, waving a hand in the air to get her attention. "Hello? Excuse me! Hi! Sorry, but I’ve gotten myself lost. Maybe you could you point me in the right direction?"
monklyinpink: (OH FUCK NO)
[Shima needs to start keeping his PCD somewhere other than his back pocket, because, from the sound of cloth rustling, it sounds like he just butt-dialed the entirety of Adstringéndum. Not that he notices. He's more distracted by another sound.]

...the hell is that buzzing?

[Sure, it's all a little muffled, but wherever he's walking to is closer to this buzzing. It's loud enough to hear. It could be he's going near a window to check (which, yes, is what he's up to).

All motion stops for a very, very short moment.

Just buzzing, soon followed by a very audible shriek of:
]

AHGHRGHBHBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!

[Aaaand running now. If this house has somewhere windowless and quiet to hide, he will find it, and then he will hide there, hide there forever.]
monklyinpink: (IRRITATING!)
...ow ow ow.

[A PCD is on, but all there it shows the dark and stormy sky. Huh. It must have fallen out onto the ground. Nearby, close enough to be audible, there is someone talking. Someone who is: a) a very confused dude and b) whining a whole lot. Which may be understandable, considering the situation Shima just got dumped into.]

This isn’t... where did the forest gGH-- [There’s a 'thud' that follows the pained grunt, the feed shaking a little.] ...okay... okay. Not getting up. Not yet. Okay. Did... did that guy kick me into another dimension? Can they even do that? Is that even possible?

[There is a brief pause as the off-screen boy takes in his surroundings, at least what parts of it he can see from on the ground.]

...oh... oh crap... or I died... oh god... I’m too young to die! [Here comes the inevitable spiral into panic.] This doesn’t... is this even any kind of heaven? It’s all rubble! Overcast sky... rain... no pretty girls to greet me... this must be the other place! Craaap! Koneko was right! Can’t I still repent or... or anything?! This is so unfair! This has got to be a mistake!
